“After nearly 8 months of waiting, Robi has obtained permission for ‘National Roaming’ with Teletalk. This means Teletalk customers can use Robi’s network and vice versa. In areas where Teletalk’s network is unavailable or weak, customers will be able to use Robi’s network for all types of mobile services, including making calls. Similarly, Robi’s customers will have the same benefit; they can use Teletalk’s network.
The decision to grant Robi this permission was confirmed by the top level of the Department of Posts and Telecommunications, according to Techshohor.com. Before this, BTRC had sought approval from the telecom regulator to grant Robi this permission. The regulatory authority has now ensured that Robi is granted this permission.
Shahed Alam, Robi’s Chief Corporate and Regulatory Officer, told Techshohor.com that they would start it on a trial basis within a few months. After a maximum of 6 months of trial, they want to commercialize it.
He mentioned, ‘To make this successful, changes are needed in the ecosystem. The government needs to give importance to solving the problems in the ‘National Roaming’ process.’
Shahed Alam said, ‘Teletalk’s customers will undoubtedly benefit once Robi’s network is available.’
Meanwhile, on March 26 of the current year, Banglalink-Teletalk Limited launched this National Roaming service in the country.
At the inauguration of this service, the Minister of Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology, Junaid Ahmed Palak, said, ‘Under the guidance of the Prime Minister’s Information Technology Adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy, I have taken the revolutionary decision to launch National Roaming in Bangladesh.’
Robi had presented detailed proposals to BTRC regarding this National Roaming. They had demonstrated various sharing methods, modalities, connectivity topologies, and the benefits and challenges of roaming.
Robi states that multi-vendor integration in two networks and IP conflict are major challenges in radio core signaling among operators. An ecosystem is being created to address all these issues.
Currently, Robi has 50.83 million customers, and Teletalk has 6.5 million.”
