Telegram has updated its app with a bunch of new features to improve video and chat. Video speed controls and adaptive video quality that adjusts to network conditions means faster loading. You can now attach media to already sent messages and the app will show the last edit timestamp for each message in chats. And developers get new monetization options.
Video playback
You can now adjust video playback speed by pressing and swiping right on the video screen up to 2.5x. For Android, you can rewind or fast forward by 10 seconds by tapping left or right on the screen. This should make video interaction more convenient.
Channel owners will benefit from automatic adjustments to video quality based on their connection speed. The platform will compress and optimize high-resolution uploads, offering three quality settings: low, medium, and high. Additionally, iOS users can now swipe up on a video to activate picture-in-picture (PiP) mode.
Improvements in Message Editing and Hashtag Functionality
Telegram has revamped its message editing tools, allowing users to attach media to text messages while editing. This new capability enables users to add images directly to messages, replacing the original content seamlessly.
Edited messages will now indicate the last time they were changed. If a message is edited multiple times, the app will display the most recent edit timestamp. Additionally, small groups will now have read receipts for each member, a feature that aligns with similar functionalities found in WhatsApp.
The introduction of chat-specific hashtags is designed to streamline message retrieval within groups and channels. Users can create hashtags following the #hashtag@username format, making it easier to locate all messages tagged with a specific hashtag in a particular chat.
Enhanced Bot Functionality and Ad Integration
Telegram’s popularity is partly due to its strong support for programmable bots. The platform now allows bots to send up to 30 messages per second, with an option to increase this limit to 1,000 messages per second using Telegram Stars, the platform’s digital currency.
Bots can also earn revenue through Telegram Ads, providing a new monetization channel for content creators. The platform shares 50% of ad revenue with creators, and bot developers can now participate in this revenue-sharing program, further expanding the monetization opportunities on Telegram.
This update underscores Telegram’s commitment to continuous improvement and user engagement as it seeks to strengthen its position in the competitive messaging app market. Users can expect more enhancements in the future.
