Fixed wireless access (FWA) service is going to be launched for internet consumers in Bangladesh. Telecommunication operators in the country have been granted permission to provide this service. The Internet can be accessed via a Wi-Fi connection.
According to the information from the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), as of January 2024, there are approximately 129.18 million internet users in the country, among whom 116.30 million are mobile internet users, and the rest are 12.88 million broadband users.
A competition is set to begin between mobile operators and broadband internet operators. It is hoped that there will be significant changes in the Internet business.
With the effective implementation of the new 5G guidelines, FWA service, along with approval, will enable mobile operators to provide high-speed internet services in specific locations such as households and businesses through wireless networks. Consequently, the coverage area of broadband internet service will expand. Especially in areas where access to internet services is limited, people will be able to enjoy the benefits of broadband speed effortlessly. However, to avail of this service, one will need a 5G-supported mobile phone or device. Therefore, FWA generally relies on the high-speed capabilities of 5G networks.
Industry stakeholders believe that the commercial launch of 5G by the country’s telecommunications operators might delay the expansion of this service.
Currently, telecommunications operators in Bangladesh provide mobile internet services, while Internet Service Providers (ISPs) offer broadband services.
Mobile operators like Grameenphone, Robi, and Banglalink provide mobile internet services using technologies such as 3G, 4G, and 5G through cellular networks. Almost all smartphones and tablets in the country are capable of wireless data transmission.
On the other hand, internet services are provided through fiber optics by ISPs. Broadband internet users experience faster speeds compared to mobile internet.
With the introduction of fixed wireless access, mobile operators will be able to offer similar services. They will need to install an external antenna and an internal router or modem. A specific subscription fee will also be required.
An official from the BTRC stated that by granting permission for the launch of FWA service, the regulatory authority has paved the way for mobile operators to start FWA services, keeping in mind the future prospect of 5G service.
